Coating marketing leans heavily on hardness ratings, and 9H gets quoted constantly. It is close to meaningless as a buying signal — the pencil-hardness scale it comes from tops out at 9H, so most quality coatings claim it. Hardness also does not predict the properties owners actually notice.
The properties that matter day to day are durability (how many years before it stops behaving like a coating), hydrophobicity (how aggressively water sheets off), chemical resistance (whether bird droppings and sap etch through), and self-cleaning behaviour (how much dirt simply does not stick). Coatings trade these against each other. A very hard, very durable coating is often less slick than a softer consumer product that beads spectacularly for eight months and then stops.
This is the least popular thing to say in coating marketing and the most consistently true. A mid-tier coating installed over properly corrected, fully decontaminated, panel-wiped paint in a controlled environment will outperform a flagship product rushed onto a car that was washed in a driveway an hour earlier.
Coatings bond to the clear coat. Anything between the two — polishing oils, wax residue, road film, moisture — compromises that bond. Most coating failures we see are not product failures; they are preparation failures, and they show up as patchy beading and high spots within months.
Manufacturer-backed warranties are usually tied to an accredited installer, registered in the owner's name, and conditional on documented maintenance — often an annual inspection. They typically cover premature failure of the coating itself: loss of gloss, loss of hydrophobic performance, or delamination.
They generally do not cover scratches, stone chips, or etching from contaminants left on the paint for extended periods. A coating buys time to remove bird droppings before they etch; it does not make the paint immune to them. Read what triggers the warranty and what voids it before you value it highly.
Ask what correction is included and how many stages. Ask whether the coating is registered to you and what the maintenance requirement is. Ask where the car will be during curing — coatings need hours of controlled conditions, and a car returned to a wet street too early will not cure properly. Ask to see the paint under inspection lighting before and after correction rather than in daylight.
An installer who answers those precisely, and who tells you honestly when your paint does not need multi-stage correction, is a better signal than any brand name on the bottle.
Manufacturer durability figures assume correct maintenance, and most coatings that underperform were simply washed badly. The essentials are straightforward: a pH-neutral shampoo rather than a strong degreaser, the two-bucket method or a touchless pre-rinse, clean microfibre, and no automatic brush tunnels.
Coatings also benefit from an occasional dedicated maintenance product — a light topper that refreshes surface tension without adding a competing layer. What they do not benefit from is wax applied on top, which sits over the coating, attracts dirt and masks the hydrophobic behaviour you paid for.
Watch for the early warning sign: water that used to bead tightly starting to sheet instead, usually appearing first on horizontal panels where UV and contamination are heaviest. Caught early that is often a cleaning and decontamination issue rather than coating failure, and a maintenance appointment restores it. Left for a year it usually means the coating has genuinely worn through.
