Three variables move a quote far more than anything else: size, condition and scope. Size is straightforward — a three-row SUV has substantially more glass, paint and carpet than a sedan, and every stage takes proportionally longer. Condition is the one people underestimate. A car that has been maintained is quick work; a car with ground-in pet hair, spilled drinks in the carpet backing or two years of bonded contamination can double the labour for the same nominal service.
Scope is where quotes diverge most. "Full detail" is not a standardised term. One shop means a thorough wash and interior clean; another means decontamination, machine polish and protection. When comparing prices, compare the step list, not the label.
A very low price on paint work almost always means one of three things: an all-in-one glaze that hides swirls temporarily rather than removing them, a single fast pass with an aggressive pad that removes more clear coat than necessary, or no decontamination step at all so contaminants get dragged across the paint during polishing.
The first is cosmetic and washes out in a few months. The second and third cause damage you pay to correct later, on a car with less clear coat left to work with. Paying twice is the common outcome.
A proper exterior service should already include a safe hand wash, wheels and tyres, chemical decontamination and a protective finish. If those are billed separately, the headline price is not the price. Genuine add-ons are things that need materially more time or product: engine bay work, headlight restoration, odour removal, ceramic coating, and heavy pet-hair extraction.
Interior work follows the same logic. Vacuuming and wipe-down are baseline. Hot-water extraction of carpets and upholstery, leather cleaning and conditioning, and steam work on vents and trim are the steps that actually change how a cabin looks and smells, and they take real time.
Mobile pricing tends to be comparable to shop pricing for equivalent work, because the labour is the same. The saving is not on the invoice — it is in what you do not spend: no round trip across the city, no lost half-day, and critically in New York, no surrendering a parking space you may not get back. For anyone with street parking, that last item has real monetary value.
Where a shop still wins on cost is anything requiring a lift or a controlled paint environment — bodywork, rust repair, or full repaints. Those are not mobile jobs and any honest operator will say so.
The most useful thing you can do is send photographs before booking. Interior shots of the carpets and seats, exterior shots in daylight showing the paint at an angle, and a note on where the car is parked let an operator quote accurately rather than defensively. Vague enquiries produce padded quotes, because the risk of an unexpectedly rough car gets priced in.
Be specific about condition. Pet hair, smoke, a spilled drink that soaked into the carpet backing, or paint that has never been corrected all change the labour materially. Disclosing them upfront almost always costs less than having them discovered on arrival, when the choice is a revised price or a compromised job.
Finally, ask what happens if the work takes longer than expected. A fixed quote that holds regardless is worth paying slightly more for than an hourly estimate that drifts. Any operator confident in their process should be willing to commit to a number once they have seen the car in photographs.
