We start with the engine cold — never cleaning a hot bay, because thermal shock can crack components. We mask sensitive electronics: alternator, intake filter, distributor (if present), exposed fuse boxes, battery terminals, and any open air intakes. On modern vehicles that's often just the intake and alternator; older engines need more extensive masking.
A water-based degreaser goes on all painted and metal surfaces except the masked electronics. We let it dwell, then agitate with soft detail brushes to break up bonded grease. Instead of high-pressure rinsing, we use low-pressure water through a garden hose or controlled spray bottle — enough to flush, not enough to force past gasket seals. Air compressor blows water out of every crevice. Everything is hand-dried before anything starts.
Finally, a water-based dressing goes on rubber hoses, plastic engine covers, and painted metal. It restores a deep black color without leaving a greasy film — and the water-based formulation won't attack rubber the way old-style silicone-based dressings can. The goal is factory-fresh, not wet-and-shiny.
We don't pressure-wash engine bays. We don't use solvent-based degreasers on modern plastics — they cause whitening and brittleness over time.
