Oxidized headlights aren't just ugly โ they're a measurable safety hazard. Yellowed, hazy lenses can cut effective light output by 40โ70% versus clear ones. That's the difference between seeing a pedestrian at 200 feet and seeing them at 80. Most drivers don't realize how much clarity they've lost because the change happens gradually over three to five years of UV exposure.
Replacing headlight assemblies can run $400 to over $2,000 per side depending on the vehicle โ and on modern cars with adaptive LED or matrix systems, much more. A professional restoration runs $79โ$199 per pair and lasts two to three years with proper UV coating. It's one of the highest-ROI services in detailing and one of the easiest to do badly.

NYC headlights oxidize faster than suburban ones for three reasons. First, cars are parked outside in sun for longer uninterrupted stretches, especially on street-park vehicles. Second, ozone and air pollution accelerate the breakdown of the factory UV coating. Third, NYC vehicles get hit with more de-icing salt spray and road debris, which physically abrades the already-weakened coating.
By year three most factory coatings are already cracking at the microscopic level. Once that happens, UV hits the raw polycarbonate lens directly and the yellowing starts. From there it's about 18โ24 months until the lens is noticeably hazed. That's why headlight restoration is something most NYC vehicles need every three to four years โ not every ten, like most factory literature suggests.

A real restoration is a wet-sanding job, not a polish. We mask the surrounding paint with tape, then wet-sand the lens with progressively finer grits โ typically 800, 1500, 2500, and 3000 โ to cut through the oxidized layer and expose fresh polycarbonate underneath. Each grit level has to fully remove the scratches from the previous one or the final lens will be hazy.
After sanding, we machine-polish the lens with a finishing compound until it's glass-clear. Then โ and this is where most "kits" fail โ we apply a real two-part UV-protective clear coat. Without that final coating step, the restored lens will re-oxidize in six months because you've removed the factory UV protection as part of sanding. The two-part coat bonds chemically and lasts two to three years before any touch-up is needed.
We don't use toothpaste, bug spray, or any of the viral home remedies. Those may polish out light haze for a week, but they remove no oxidation at a meaningful depth and they leave no UV protection behind โ which means the lens yellows worse and faster than before. We also don't use one-step restoration kits that skip the clear-coat step. Those are glorified polish โ they look good the day you do them and hazy again within a season.
If a lens is cracked, pitted beyond the surface layer, or has internal fogging (moisture inside the sealed housing), restoration won't fix it. We'll tell you upfront โ you need a replacement assembly, and we won't charge you for a service that can't deliver.

Services that pair well: scratch removal before ceramic coating, interior detailing with exterior work, engine bay cleaning as an add-on to any full detail.

Headlight restoration is one of the most commonly botched jobs in the industry. Quick-shop restoration usually means a buffing wheel with polish and a spray wax โ which masks haze for a few weeks and accelerates the next round of oxidation. We do the full wet-sanding process, the machine polish, and the two-part UV clear coat. The difference shows up at month six, not at the walkaround.
Every restoration we do comes with a one-year guarantee โ if the lens yellows again within twelve months, we re-coat it at no charge. That guarantee is only possible because we actually apply a real UV coating. Shops that skip that step can't offer it.
Pricing is $79 per pair for light to moderate oxidation, $149 for heavy oxidation requiring full wet-sanding, and $199 for European projector assemblies that need masking and careful handling. Call (808) 556-7589 or request a quote with a photo of the lenses and we'll confirm which tier applies.
