BMWs are the most common luxury vehicles in NYC — and that means they face the most city abuse. Here's how to keep yours looking factory-fresh.
BMW M vehicles (M3, M4, M5, X3M, X4M) use softer clear coats than standard BMW models. The paint develops swirl marks faster and requires more careful wash technique. If you're driving an M car in NYC and going through touchless or brush car washes, you're adding defects every single time.
BMW performance brakes generate enormous amounts of brake dust — especially the M compound brakes. This iron-containing dust bonds to wheel surfaces within days and permanently pits aluminum, chrome, and painted finishes if not removed. Weekly wheel cleaning with an iron-dissolving product is the minimum for any BMW in city driving. Better solution: wheel ceramic coating that prevents dust from bonding.

BMW clear coats are among the harder factory finishes, which cuts both ways. They resist light marring better than a soft Japanese or Porsche finish, so a BMW that looks swirled has usually been washed badly for years rather than once. But when correction is needed, the same hardness means a finishing polish and soft pad will barely touch it.
In practice that means a heavier cut on the first pass — a firmer pad and a more aggressive compound than the same defect would need on other paint — followed by a genuine refining stage. Skipping the refining step on hard clear coat leaves haze that shows badly under LED and under direct sun, which is why test-spotting before committing to a plan matters here.
The gloss black trim BMW uses on Shadowline packages, kidney grilles and mirror caps scratches more easily than the paint next to it, and it shows every mark. It is also the part most likely to be damaged by an enthusiastic wash — a mitt that is fine on a door will mark a gloss black grille surround.
Treat it as a separate surface: a dedicated clean microfibre, no pressure, and a coating over it so future cleaning is lower risk. Exposed carbon on M cars needs UV-safe dressing rather than a general trim product; carbon lacquer yellows with UV exposure and, unlike paint, cannot be corrected back once it does.
The electric cars bring two practical differences. The frunk and charge-port surrounds have seals that hold water after a wash and drip onto the paint later, so they need drying deliberately rather than being left. And the sensor array behind the grille area does not appreciate a pressure washer held close — keep distance and angle away from the housings.
The paint itself is broadly conventional BMW clear coat rather than the softer single-stage finish found on some EVs, so correction is closer to a petrol 3 Series than to a Tesla. What genuinely changes is charging behaviour: a car that sits plugged in outdoors for hours daily accumulates standing contamination that a commuter does not.

Merino and Extended Merino are genuinely perforated leather, and perforation is the complication — liquid cleaner pushed into the holes ends up in the foam underneath and stays there. Product goes onto the applicator, never onto the seat, and the perforated panels get worked lightly and dried immediately. Bolsters wear first on every BMW, and they are worth conditioning more often than the centre panels.
