Why Most Scratches Can Be Removed (and Some Can't)

Vehicle paint has four layers: electrocoat, primer, basecoat (color), and clear coat. The clear coat is the top layer โ€” typically 40โ€“50 microns thick on factory paint โ€” and it's where almost all daily-driving scratches live. If you can't catch a scratch with a fingernail, it's in the clear coat and a proper polish will remove it entirely. If you feel a fingernail catch, it's through the clear and into the basecoat โ€” and polish won't fix it.

The nail test is quick but imperfect. A proper assessment uses a paint-thickness gauge that measures total coat depth and a 10x loupe under LED light to judge how deep the scratch cuts. We do both before quoting. About 70% of scratches NYC drivers bring to us are clear-coat-only and fully removable. The other 30% need a different approach โ€” touch-up paint, spot respray, or acceptance that they're cosmetic.

NYC's Specific Scratch Patterns

NYC cars collect four distinct scratch types. Parking-brush scratches โ€” the uniform swirl pattern from rotating cloth car washes. Key-to-door transfers โ€” long thin scratches from mis-aimed keys or tight parking. Shopping-cart and door-ding damage โ€” short scratches often paired with a small dent. Bumper and rocker rash โ€” wider scuffs from bumper-to-bumper parking or curbed entries.

Each type needs a different approach. Swirls: full-panel machine polish. Key transfers: wet-sand plus machine polish if shallow, touch-up-plus-polish if deep. Shopping-cart marks: localized polish with paintless dent repair on the paired dent if present. Bumper rash: wet-sand plus polish on shallow, respray on deeper. We identify the scratch type first, pick the correction method second โ€” not the other way around.

Related Services

Typical multi-service bookings: full detail plus ceramic coating for new-vehicle protection. Paint correction alone to restore older paint. Lease return prep with scratch removal for end-of-lease vehicles.

Our Scratch Removal Process

Every scratch assessment starts with paint-depth readings around the scratch and nearby panels โ€” this tells us how much clear coat we have to work with safely. We generally won't remove more than 20% of remaining clear coat on any correction, because the rest needs to stay intact for long-term UV protection and future corrections.

Shallow clear-coat scratches (not fingernail-catchable): machine polish with a cutting compound, step down to a finishing polish. Usually one panel, 30โ€“60 minutes of work. Fully invisible result. Medium clear-coat damage (partial fingernail catch): wet-sand with 2500 or 3000 grit, compound-polish-finish sequence. 1โ€“2 hours per area. Fully invisible if the damage is fully within clear coat.

Through-clear scratches: these need touch-up paint in the scratch itself, followed by a leveling process โ€” either a dedicated touch-up pen with a clear coat, or a localized spot respray. Spot respray is bodyshop-level work; we coordinate that if needed. Touch-up can hide a deeper scratch well from normal viewing distance but won't make it fully invisible the way a correctable scratch does.

Scratch Removal vs. Paint Correction

A single scratch is a scratch removal job โ€” localized, often same-day. Systemic swirl marks across the whole vehicle is a paint correction job โ€” full-vehicle multi-stage work that takes a day or more. The techniques overlap but the time, price, and scope don't. We'll tell you which category your situation falls into.

Clients often come asking for "scratch removal" and after inspection the honest answer is: you have mild swirl marks across the whole car and two specific scratches, you'd be better served by a one-step polish across the whole vehicle than by spot-treating two scratches. We'd rather tell you that than upsell the wrong service.

Why Xentra Auto for Scratch Work

Scratch removal is where most generic detailers over-polish and cause long-term damage. Aggressive compound on a small scratch might remove it today but takes 15 microns of clear coat with it โ€” and if that panel needs another correction in three years, there's not enough clear left. We polish conservatively, prioritizing as little clear-coat removal as possible while fully correcting the defect.

We take before-and-after photos under LED inspection lighting for every scratch removal. If you want documentation for insurance (hit-and-run, covered damage claim, etc.) we provide it. Everything is timestamped and logged. If a claim benefits from showing before-state, you'll have it.

Single-scratch pricing starts at $79 for straightforward clear-coat work, $129โ€“$249 for multiple scratches or a full panel, higher for touch-up work involving spot respray. Call (808) 556-7589 or send photos of the damage for a fixed quote.
